About Us
Reef Encounters was founded in 1995 to serve the English speaking community of divers in Okinawa. Since that time we have expanded greatly. We now offer training and dive trips in English and Japanese. We have been diving the waters of Okinawa longer than almost all the shops on Okinawa.
We offer boat dives off of our custom 40ft dive boat, exploring the reefs and wrecks that surround the island of Okinawa. We are also the recognized experts on diving Yonaguni, Japan sight of the famous ancient ruins found underwater in the waters of the East china Sea.
We also offer training in Nitrox and technical diving to include Trimix and Wreck Penetration Diving. Our dedicated team of divers has found numerous wrecks in the waters of Okinawa and are still searching for more. Reef Encounters has been leading the way in bringing nitrox training and diving to Okinawa and still continues leading the way in cutting edge dive training.
Unlike most Japanese run shops we offer both group guided dives and buddy diving off of our boats. Our dives average 40-60 minutes and include many of the best drift dives available- the spots where other dive boat will not go. We do not take taiken (non-licensed) divers on our boat so that the divers can experience the best sites available.
